Minister

“I’m afraid that I shall never be a major prophet because, alas, major prophets have no sense of humor. Only minor prophets can see how funny it is to have one’s head in the Church and one’s feet on the stage!”

-Ruth St. Denis

Rev. Dr. Angela Yarber has served as a minister in local churches since 1999. While justice and peacemaking permeate every aspect of Angela’s ministry, most of her work focuses on the intersections among the arts (performing arts and visual arts), LGBTQ inclusion, and worship and preaching. Since she no longer serves as a pastor, she now works as a consultant, guest preacher, workshop and retreat leader with local churches and denominational bodies.

Parson’s Porch Press published a book of Angela’s sermons: Tearing Open the Heavens: Select Sermons from Year B. One of Angela’s sermons, “Empowering the Silenced,” is featured in And Your Daughters Shall Prophesy: Sermons by Women in Baptist Life. Another sermon, “Transforming Faith,” which deals with transgender justice and inclusion, was selected as one of Geez Magazine’s “30 Sermons You’d Never Hear in Church.” Angela has preached, led conferences, and ministered through the arts and feminism in local churches and interfaith gatherings since 1999.  Rev. Yarber has also been involved in helping congregations become more gender inclusive, welcoming and affirming of LGBTQ people, and aware of the dynamics of privilege and oppression, particularly through her most recent book, Microaggressions in Ministry: Confronting the Violence of Everyday Church.

Angela offers workshops, classes, and conferences to teach churches about using the arts in worship and education, addressing microaggressions in ministerial contexts, and about LGBTQ inclusion.  She also officiates weddings.  To arrange for Angela to preach, lead a workshop, class, or conference with your community of faith, contact her today!
